Transforming schoolyards

In the middle of the 20th century, asphalt-paved streets and highways became a quintessential part of the American landscape. The same process was applied to playgrounds and schoolyards. School districts are redesiging their spaces to incorporate gardens to soak up rainwater. These rain gardens use vegetation and soil to absorb rainfall and reduce stormwater runoff.
